Donington Endurance, 21st June

  • Apr 29
  • 5 min read

Entries will open tomorrow, Thursday 30th April at midday. As an added incentive to enter early, the first 38 classic and first 38 modern entries to enter will receive the option of a garage space, on a first-entered-first-served basis.

Much anticipated, our pair of 2 hour (and a minute) endurance races at Donington National, on Sunday 21st June are perfect for endurance virgins, or experienced drivers alike. A few details have been tweaked since first announcing these races. This news article isn't an official regulation document, but it should serve as guidance to help you plan, before the final instructions are released 10 days before the event. The Driver Briefings for the two Endurance races will take place before Qualifying.

These races will be supported by a pair of R-Werks Special Saloons & Modsports races, plus a 40 minute Adams & Page Swinging 60s race. This gives Swinging 60s drivers a choice, enter the 2 hour classic race, a 'normal' 40 minute race, or even both!

Endurance Overview.

  • 40 minutes qualifying and a 2 hour and 1 minute race for classic cars.

  • 40 minutes qualifying and a 2 hour and 1 minute race for modern cars.

  • Single car, with one, two or three drivers (sorry, no multi-car teams).

  • Minimum of two mandatory timed pit stops, one of which must involve refuelling.

  • Entry fee of just £890 for 161 minutes of tracktime.

What is different?

  • The race duration has now been increased by 1 extra minute! By stepping just over the 2 hour threshold, it allows for a fractionally larger grid capacity.

  • No need to spend a penny on refuelling equipment! Competitors can use the circuit petrol pumps (Spa Six Hours style), with the driver adding fuel themselves. Alternatively, for those with their own equipment and team member, refuelling may take place in the pit lane.

  • Different pit lane entrance, using the Melbourne Loop to exit the circuit.

  • Competitors will drive slowly through a barriered lane through the paddock, allowing refuelling at the circuit pumps for some, whilst others continue, joining the pit lane in between the race control tower and medical centre buildings.

Refuelling at the pumps has long been a tradition at the Spa Three and Six Hours.
Refuelling at the pumps has long been a tradition at the Spa Three and Six Hours.

In addition, we have a pair of R-Werks Special Saloons & Modsports races, plus a 40 minute Adams & Page Swinging 60s race, for those that prefer our traditional format.

Let's look at things in more detail.

Drivers and Cars:

All drivers must be CSCC members, all cars must be registered to a CSCC series or championship. The races are for one car, with one, two or three drivers permitted. If you wish to have three drivers, please contact the CSCC once you have entered so we can add your third driver. Drivers are not able to drive in two different vehicles during a race. These races are part of a series, but championship cars are welcome to fit into a suitable series, at no extra registration cost. Competitors will be split between the two endurance races based on car age, category, likely pace and available space.

The Classic race will have a grid of 46 cars, likely comprising the following series, each

following their own class structure, tyre regulations and awards (just as at Spa): The aim is for the race to comprise of: Adams & Page Swinging 60s Midland Classic Restorations Ecurie Classic K Mike Hawthorn Jaguar Challenge, supported by Suffolk Classic Services

The Modern race will have a 46 car grid, likely made up of the series below, each following their own class structure, tyre regulations and awards (just as at Spa). Speeds will vary greatly, so in the interests of safety, the CSCC reserves the right to politely refuse entries in this race from the slowest cars, sorry.

Pit Lane and Refuelling:

The Endurance races will have a minimum of two mandatory timed pit-stops, each with a minimum timed stop of six minutes from pit-in to it-out. The timing line mid-way down the Melbourne Loop will form the pit-in, the normal pit exit timing line is pit-out. When drivers wish to make a pit-stop, you must keep over to the left hand side of the circuit when travelling down the back straight, and signal your intention to enter the Melbourne Loop, either using indicators or hand signals. Overtaking in the pit's (from the Pit-In Melbourne Loop to the Pit Exit) is strictly prohibited.

Competitors will exit the circuit at the Melbourne Loop, gradually reducing speed, firstly to 60kph (37.3mph) as they cross the timing line, then down to a maximum of just 40kph (24.85 mph), as they turn left off of the loop, towards the paddock. Travelling through the paddock via a lane created with crowd barriers, cars will ultimately join the pit lane between race control and the medical centre. The ‘normal’ pit entry will be closed during the endurance races except for mechanical breakdowns, retirements and circuit vehicles. Any stop made using the 'normal' pit entry will not count as one of the mandatory stops.

Re-fuelling is required during at least one of the pit-stops, competitors have two options, with final details in the final instructions. The CSCC will contact all entries before the event, to confirm which refuelling method they choose: A) Re-fuelling at one of the four circuit petrol pumps. Drivers will exit the vehicle with the engine off, pumping fuel themselves. Help from officials will be provided to assist drivers with belts, the area is closed to pit crew. Competitors wishing to do this will need to pre-pay £200 to the CSCC. A record of how many litres used at the pumps, during qualifying and the race only will be made by an official, with any difference refunded after the meeting. B) Re-fuelling in the pit lane using purpose made containers, such as those from VP, Jerry Cans with nozzle, or professional refuelling kit (no open containers or funnels). Safety equipment will be as per NCR Ch. 12 App. 11 Art. 2 The pit window opens at 10 minutes and closes at 1 hour 50 minutes. Competitors may pit at any time, but to remain penalty-free, stops must be started within the pit window. At least two stops must be made of six minutes each, with one or more of these to include refuelling. The mandatory stops cannot be made within 15 minutes of each other, to prevent both stops being made within one potential safety car. The Adams & Page Swinging 60’s 40 minute race and R-Werks Special Saloons & Modsports 2 x 15 minute races will use the ‘normal’ pit entry and exit.

Pit In is via the Melbourne Loop

In the interests of safety, the pits and paddock will be controlled by multiple speed guns, travelling down a lane that separates them from pedestrians in the paddock, with Marshals controlling specified pedestrian crossing lanes along the crowd barriers. Competitors must have the means to calculate when they are travelling at both 40kph and 60kph, this can be through a speedometer, marks on rev counter or some other method. To be able to time your stop you should have an onboard timer, these can cost from just a couple of pounds online. Pit-to-car radios are permitted, provided the required permission is gained from East Midlands Airport 30 days in advance, please see the required form on our event page.

Garages will be issued on a first-entered-first-served basis, with the aim for each garage to house one classic endurance and one modern endurance entry each. This way, competitors are spread out, we know that most drivers will prefer to pit outside their allocated garage. Those who enter later, or prefer not to use a garage will have ample, allocated space in paddock 2/3.

Version 1 timetable, note this may be subject to change:

Access to the circuit will be from 19:00 on Saturday, after the majority of non-CSCC competitors have left from that days race meeting.
